Harvest clean, high-quality propolis from your beehive with this 8-frame plastic propolis trap. Propolis is the reddish-brown resinous substance bees collect from tree buds and use to seal cracks in their hive. It's prized for its natural antimicrobial properties and is widely used in tinctures, lozenges, balms and natural health products — making propolis collection a valuable side-yield for any beekeeper.

How the propolis trap works

The propolis collector replaces your standard inner cover or hive mat. Bees see the grooves as gaps that need sealing and fill them with propolis. For best results, prop open your outer cover slightly to let a small amount of light into the hive — the bees will work harder to seal every groove and shut out the light.

Harvesting the propolis

When the trap is full, remove it from the hive, place it inside a plastic bag and freeze overnight. Once frozen, the propolis becomes brittle. Twist or flex the trap inside the bag and the propolis snaps off cleanly into the bag — ready to store, sell, or use.

The mat deformed / melted and the bees got through and started building comb up top.
The propolis that I got in the second mat I order was very hard to remove even after freezing and rolling.
