About the timber and joints

Cut from New Zealand pine — the standard timber for Australian Langstroth boxes because it's straight-grained, stable, and takes paint well. Dovetail joints are the interlocking finger-joint style — each panel has precision-cut fingers that mesh with the mating corner, glued and screwed together. Generally what commercial operators prefer for the extra glue surface area.

Why WSP size?

WSP (Western Super) is a 3/4-depth size that sits between Full Depth and Ideal:

Lighter than Full Depth — approximately 20% smaller, easier lifting when full of honey
Larger than Ideal — more honey capacity per super than the Ideal size
Popular in WA and with beekeepers wanting a middle-ground weight

How to assemble

Lay out the four panels, run a bead of wood glue along each dovetail joint, mesh the corners together, clamp, and drive stainless steel or galvanised screws through the joints. Wipe excess glue with a damp cloth and let cure overnight. Apply two coats of exterior paint before putting bees in — external house paint from any hardware store will work. Lighter colours help keep the hive cool in the Australian summer.

What frames fit this box? Standard WSP Langstroth frames (not full-depth or Ideal) — see our WSP frames. The same WSP frames work in both 8-frame and 10-frame WSP boxes.

Can I use this on a full-depth hive? Yes — WSP boxes are often used as honey supers stacked on top of a full-depth brood box. The smaller WSP size means the super is lighter when full of honey (easier to lift off at harvest). You'll need WSP frames for the super, which sit above your existing full-depth frames in the brood box below.

What else do I need to complete a hive? A beehive lid, a base, 10 frames with WSP foundation, and bees.

Do I need to paint it? Yes — untreated timber degrades quickly outdoors. Two coats of exterior paint will do it. External house paint from any hardware store will work.
