1.5 litre rapid round bee feeder for inside hive top feeding — a compact top feeder that sits under most standard migratory lids without needing a timber rim or extra super box. Suits 5-frame nucs and standard 8-frame and 10-frame Langstroth hives when used with a crown board.

When to use a top feeder

Top feeders let you top up sugar syrup without opening the brood box or disturbing the bees. Ideal for:

  • Winter feeding — when foraging is minimal
  • Post-split feeding — helping a new colony establish
  • Drought or dearth periods — supplementing wildflower shortage
  • Encouraging comb building — extra syrup speeds wax production

How it works

The feeder sits inside the hive on top of a crown board, filled with sugar syrup. The ridged central hole and cap give the bees a foothold when climbing up and back down to the supers below. A clear plastic cover over the ridged hole prevents bees from drowning.

Frequently asked questions

What do I fill it with? Sugar syrup (1:1 sugar to water for spring build-up, 2:1 for winter storage) or a commercial honey substitute. Refill as needed.

How often do I need to check it? Depends on colony strength and season — most beekeepers check weekly during active feeding periods. A strong colony will empty 1.5L in 1-3 days.

Can I use two feeders at once? Yes — larger hives benefit from multiple feeders (see fit table above).

Do I need a crown board? Yes — the feeder sits on a crown board with cut-outs that let bees access the syrup from the super below.

1.5 litre Top Feeder problems

The top feeder has a flat bottom and no way of locating it over a hole in the top board. Requires a a ring or similar attached to its base, secondly the holes in the central cup are big enough to allow bees access from the central area to the reservoir, when they empty the feeder. Refilling then requires suiting up and emptying the bees from the reservoir before adding more syrup

Top Feeder, works as stated but does not fit

Does not fit neatly into the flow hive roof space and roof will not sit firmly back in place.
