What is "commercial grade"?

Commercial grade timber is the same NZ pine used across our range, but may include some superficial knots and colour variations that don't affect the structural integrity of the box. Once painted, the visual differences disappear. Practical choice for commercial operators buying volume, or hobbyists wanting to save.

Dovetail or rebate joints?

This box is available in two joint styles at the same price:

• Dovetail — interlocking finger joints, extra glue surface, generally preferred by commercial operators
• Rebate — stepped-corner joint, simpler assembly, just as strong when glued and screwed

Both use the same 22mm NZ pine timber. Pick whichever assembly style you prefer.

How to assemble

Lay out the four panels, run a bead of wood glue along each joint, seat the corners together, clamp, and drive stainless steel or galvanised screws through the joints. Wipe excess glue and let cure overnight. Apply two coats of exterior paint before putting bees in — external house paint from any hardware store will work. Lighter colours help keep the hive cool in the Australian summer.

What's the difference between commercial grade and select grade? Commercial grade includes minor knots and colour variations; select grade is knot-free premium timber. Structurally identical. Paint hides the difference.

Which joint should I choose — dovetail or rebate? Both work equally well. Rebate is simpler to align during assembly; dovetail has slightly more glue surface. Pick your preference.
