Tint Plugs For Bucket Feeders
Tint Plugs are commonly used by US beekeepers to make cost effective top feeders for their hives. Simply drill a 49mm or 50mm hole into any bucket and you have a cheap feeder. The tint plug itself will need some small holes drilled or poked through to allow the bees to suck the syrup.
The benefit of the tint plug over a screened lid is that they can be used on any bucket and as you do not need to open the lid to re-fill the buckets will last longer.

How Does Pail/Bucket Feeding Work?
Fill the bucket close to the top with syrup, then with the lid and tint plug attached tip the bucket upside down to make a vaccuum. The pail is placed on top of the frames or over the hole in the inner cover, where bees come up to the plug and lick, allowing more syrup to drip down as they are feeding.
Note:
- We recommend placing an empty hive body and lid around the feeder to prevent robbing
- It is important to fill your bucket all the way otherwise syrup will stream out when you flip it
