Why a double-super kit?

Two supers gives you a brood box + honey super setup from day one — the standard configuration once a colony is established. Or run both as brood boxes for a strong overwintering hive, then split into two colonies in spring. Cheaper per super than buying single supers separately, and matched components arrive together.

Choose your options

Three variant choices when you add to cart:

• Queen excluder — none, plastic or galvanised metal. Sits between the brood and honey super; keeps the queen out of the honey.
• Foundation — none, Australian beeswax, black plastic or yellow plastic. Bees draw comb from the embossed pattern faster than starting from scratch.
• Frame eyelets — yes or no. Small brass eyelets protect the frame side-bars where wire threads through. Recommended if you're wiring frames yourself.

How to assemble

Boxes: glue and screw the pre-cut dovetail joints, clamp, cure overnight. Frames: assemble the four bars with wire or eyelets, then embed foundation. Once assembled, apply two coats of exterior paint before putting bees in — external house paint from any hardware store will work. Lighter colours help keep the hive cool in the Australian summer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need anything else to start beekeeping? You'll need bees (a 5-frame nuc is the usual starting point), a hive tool, a smoker and a bee suit. See our beekeeping starter kit for tools.

What foundation should I pick? Australian beeswax is the traditional choice — bees prefer it and it produces natural wax comb. Plastic foundation is more durable and easier for beginners because it doesn't sag or warp.

Do I need a queen excluder? Not strictly required, but recommended if you want to keep the queen laying only in the bottom super so the top super stays honey-only.

Can I run this as a single-super hive? Yes — start with one super and add the second when the colony fills the first. Storage of the spare between seasons is easy.
