Galvanised metal beehive entrance reducer with sliding gate — control your hive entrance for pest defence, winter prep and safe transport. Available for both 8 frame and 10 frame Langstroth hives.

How to use the metal entrance gate

This versatile gate gives you three positions:

Fully closed — for moving your beehive. One side of the sliding gate is perforated for ventilation while keeping all bees secure inside.
Partially open — slide the gate to control entrance size. A smaller opening helps weaker colonies defend against robber bees, wasps and pests.
Bee-only access — flip the gate so bees can enter and exit freely, but larger pests like mice are blocked out.

When to use an entrance reducer

Autumn and winter — smaller entrance is easier to defend and retains hive warmth
Weak or new colonies — fewer bees can guard a smaller opening
Robbing season — reduces incursions from neighbouring colonies and wasps
Hive moves — fully closed gate with ventilation keeps bees secure in transit

great design, wrong size

My order arrived quickly but I reckon I received a gate entrance reducer for a 10 frame box as it's too wide for my 8 frame box, so I had to modify it to fit. I really like the design however and just to flip it over to to shut the bees in behind a screen enabling air access is very handy. The lower score is for my inconvenience only, not the design.
