• Heat the paraffin wax to between 120°C and 150°C
• Fully submerge boxes, lids and bases for a minimum of 10 minutes
• The molten wax penetrates deep into the timber grain, replacing moisture and sealing the wood from the inside out
• Allow components to drain and cool before assembly

Safety note: Molten wax at dipping temperatures is a serious fire hazard. Never leave a wax dipping setup unattended, and always have a fire extinguisher and appropriate fire safety equipment on hand before you begin. The flash point of paraffin wax is >200 °C, so this should be done outdoors with precise temperature monitoring.

Treating AFB and EFB infected equipment:

Hot wax dipping is also an approved method for sterilising hive components contaminated with American Foulbrood (AFB) or European Foulbrood (EFB). At treatment temperatures, AFB spores are either destroyed by the heat or fully encapsulated within the wax, rendering them inactive. Always follow your state's biosecurity guidelines when treating infected woodware.
