Bulk Paraffin Wax Blocks — Beekeeping, Candle Making & Industrial Use
What is This Paraffin Wax Used For?
Our fully refined paraffin wax blocks are a high-quality, versatile wax sold in bulk quantities — trusted by Australian beekeepers, candle makers and industrial users nationwide.
The parafiin wax we sell is a high grade, high melt point wax with a consistent melt point of 60–62°C and no additives or fillers. This is a clean, reliable paraffin wax suitable for demanding applications where purity matters.
Beekeepers: Wax Dipping Beehive Woodware
Paraffin wax dipping is the most effective method for preserving beehive timber components, dramatically extending the working life of your woodware compared to paint alone.
How to wax dip beehive components:
- Heat the paraffin wax to between 120°C and 150°C
- Fully submerge boxes, lids and bases for a minimum of 10 minutes
- The molten wax penetrates deep into the timber grain, replacing moisture and sealing the wood from the inside out
- Allow components to drain and cool before assembly
Safety note: Molten wax at dipping temperatures is a serious fire hazard. Never leave a wax dipping setup unattended, and always have a fire extinguisher and appropriate fire safety equipment on hand before you begin. The flash point of paraffin wax is >200 °C, so this should be done outdoors with precise temperature monitoring.
For best results, many beekeepers use a 50/50 mix of paraffin and microcrystalline wax, which adds flexibility and adhesion to the treatment. We stock Bulk Microcrystalline Wax if you'd like to blend your own mix.
Treating AFB and EFB infected equipment:
Hot wax dipping is also an approved method for sterilising hive components contaminated with American Foulbrood (AFB) or European Foulbrood (EFB). At treatment temperatures, AFB spores are either destroyed by the heat or fully encapsulated within the wax, rendering them inactive. Always follow your state's biosecurity guidelines when treating infected woodware.
Candle Makers: Bulk Paraffin Wax Supply
Paraffin wax is the world's most widely used candle wax — valued for its clean burn, excellent fragrance throw, and reliable performance in pillar, votive, and container candles.
Our bulk paraffin wax blocks are ideal for candle makers who need a consistent, wholesale-priced supply without the markup of small retail packs. With sizes from 25kg up, we supply hobbyist candle makers, small batch producers, and commercial candle manufacturers across Australia.
Tips for candle making with paraffin wax:
- For pillar and votive candles, consider adding a small percentage of stearic acid to improve opacity and hardness
- Our 60–62°C melt point paraffin is well suited to moulded candles
- Paraffin has excellent fragrance load capacity, making it a popular base for heavily scented candles
Other Industrial & Commercial Uses
Beyond beekeeping and candle making, this paraffin wax is widely used for:
- Timber and wood preservation — sealing raw timber against moisture ingress
- Bicycle and chain lubrication — a clean, dry wax lubricant for drivetrain components
- Waxing threads and cordage — improves strength and water resistance
- Grafting wax — used in horticulture to seal pruning cuts and grafts
- General waterproofing — for leather, canvas, and outdoor fabrics
- Industrial moulds and casting — as a release agent or casting medium

How Much Wax Do I Need to Dip a Beehive?
As a rough guide for wax dipping beehive components, you'll need enough wax to fully submerge the largest component in your dipping vessel. For most beekeepers setting up a dipping tank:
- A single hive body (box) requires a dipping vessel holding approximately 50–80 litres/kg of molten wax
- Most commercial beekeepers maintain a standing tank of 100kg or more, topping up as wax is absorbed (a full depth box will absorb approximately 30-50g of wax).
FAQ SECTION
Q: What temperature do I need for wax dipping beehives? A: The wax needs to be between 130°C and 180°C for effective penetration and sterilisation. At this temperature, the wax is hot enough to drive moisture out of the timber and replace it. Always use a thermometer and appropriate safety equipment when working with molten wax at these temperatures.
Q: Can paraffin wax be used to treat AFB-infected hive equipment? A: Yes. Hot wax dipping at the correct temperature is an effective method for treating hive components contaminated with American Foulbrood (AFB). The heat either kills the spores or encapsulates them in wax. However, always check with your state's Department of Agriculture for current biosecurity requirements, as regulations vary.
Q: Should I use 100% paraffin or mix it with microcrystalline wax? A: Both work well. Pure paraffin wax provides excellent penetration and preservation. Mixing with microcrystalline wax (typically 50/50) results in a more flexible, less brittle coating with better adhesion — preferred by many commercial beekeepers. Microcrystalline also has a higher melt point which can be a factor if you hives will be in a hot climate. We stock bulk microcrystalline wax if you'd like to blend your own mix.
Q: Is this paraffin wax suitable for candle making? A: Yes. This is a fully refined paraffin wax with a 60–62°C melt point, making it well suited to pillar, votive, and moulded candles. It has good fragrance load capacity and a clean, consistent burn.
Q: What size should I order? A: For hobby beekeepers wax dipping their first hives, a 25kg carton is a great starting point. Candle makers and commercial beekeepers typically find the 50kg or 100kg options more economical. Contact us for pallet quotes - 40 cartons 1,000kg.
Q: Do you ship paraffin wax Australia-wide? A: Yes, we ship to all states and territories across Australia. Shipping cost is calculated at checkout based on your location and order size.
